Jyoshna & Rawa Aotearoa
"In every expression, .. only on refrain continues and that refrain is the attainment of bliss. When a artiste dedicates themselves to the service or sadhana of creative expression they have to let adrift their creative genius ..into the heart of humanity at large sweetly and gracefully afterr cleansing them in the holy waters of broadmindedness and universalism” (Sarkar P.R., Abhimata, 1973:2)
RAWA Aotearoa, or Renaissance Artistes and Writers Association is based in Aotearoa but represents a global movement that aims to free artistes from commercial slavery and the effects of pseudo culture, with the motto ‘art for service and blessedness’. We are a group of musicians, writers and artists who meet regularly to sing kirtans, devotional and socially progressive songs, to create strength and unity amongst us, and be of service to society at large.
Jyoshna and Rawa Aotearoa was established in 2012, one year after Jyoshna returned to New Zealand from living overseas (2005-2011). Today Jyoshna and Kavita (khol drum & percussion) form the core of the group while also collaborating with other singers & musicians.
Kavita got into music first when she met Jyoshna, who said ' I need a drummer' . Kavita got fascinated by Jyoshna's music and her research in India and picked up the Indian drum named khol. She got her first few lessons from Jyoshna then went to India to learn from Sri Jagaran Mahato, Jyoshna's kirtan teacher. Her first 2 weeks in India gave her enough rhythmic knowledge to keep practicing for a year.
She went back with Jyoshna a year later and learnt from Sri Jagaran for another 2 months and continues her lessons each year. As well as Rarhi marai kiirtan khol rhythms, Kavita alos picked up western rhythms too and incorporated them into her khol repertoire.
Apart from the khol drum, she also plays other percussion instruments such as cajon (which she built herself) inspired by some of Jyoshna's Spanish flamenco songs, splash cymbal and chimes, so she can fuse Indian and western rhythmic patterns.
Kavita has been performing as a percussionist with Jyoshna for the past 6 years. She performed all over Brazil on tour with Jyoshna, then in Australasia and presently in the UK and Europe.
Jyoshna and Kavita are presently in London and working with RAWA London on some very inspiring musical and dance events. To be updated soon.
